London, Nov. 12. Sir Victor Warrender, Finan- cial Secretary of the War Olier, told a questioner in the House of Commons to-day that the new barracks to be built in Kowloon would accommodate 2,700 British and 900 Indian troops.
It would probably be completext by the end of 1910 at an estimated cost of £1,350,000.
The barracks would be required to accommodate additional troops and units of the garrison at present oc- cupying temporary sub-standard buts, Sir Victor explained-Reuter,

Stockholm, Nov. 12. The Swedish Academy ma'awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1936 le the American drámatist, Eugene O'Neill.
The Nobel prize for physics is "divided betwech Profesor V. P. leta.“ of Innsbruck University, and Pro- fessor Carl David Anderson, of the California Institute of Technology.
The chemistry prize goes to Pro- fessor Peter Dubye, Berlin, for his contribution to the knowledge on the structure of the molecule.-Reuter.

DUKE OF YORK AT OPENING
London, Nov. 12. The new headquarters of the Royal" Empire Society in Northumberland Avenue were opened by the Duke of York to-day:
The Duke read a message from the King, in which His Majesty suld he Was sure the building would prove a worthy anenting-place of people from all parts of the Empire. He looked forward to visiting the premises in the near future.
On behalf of the King, the Duke of York handed the Chairman, Sir Archibald Weigall, a cheque for £100 towards the cost of a clock in the entrance hall-Reuter Special.
SHIP'S OFFICER CHARGED
ALLEGED IMPORTING OF OPIUM
James Jolinston, 52, Chief Ofter of the steamer Chuen Chow, WAG charged before Mr. K. Keen at the Central Magistracy this morning on four charges of (a). Importing 72 tacle of raw oplum on the steamer Chuen Chow, (b) possession of 72 taels of raw opium, (e) importing 18 lacls of prepared opium and (d) possession, of 18 taels of prepared opluin.
Mr. J. M. D'Almada Remedios ap- peared for the defendant and Chler Revenue Officer A. W. Grimmitt for the prosecution, the latter asking for a date for hearing to be fixed.
The case was fixed for. Wednesday, November 10, at 2.30 p.m.

Vatican City, Nov. 12, Members of the household of His Holiness the Pope to-day admitted that Pope Plus was suffering from Bright's disease- or dropsy and indicated that the condition of the Pope was caus- ing concern.
His face and legs were slightly swollen, it was Bald, but His Holiness insists on following his daily routing and refuses to curton his audiences.
Reliable sources said the Vutlean to close all police had been instructed to Vatican gates at a given signal and refuse all entry or exit until further orders. The instructions were not explained but it understood they anticipated the possible sudden death: of the Pontiff.--United Press.
