HE big Fashion Offensive in Paris has opened. Fashion writers and Buyers from a dozen differ- ent countries congregated in the French capital to see what women are to wear this autumn and winter season.

Designers and workgirls worked at even more than their usual feverish pace to complete the collections to time, owing to weeks lost during the recent strikes, and they seem to have succeeded in their task.

-FEW houses opened on time, so it is possible to begin with the first news

of the new line. Each day's news will grow in importance as the whole winter fashion story unfolds before our eyes, hour after hour, in the famous salons in the Rue Royale, the Champs- Elysees, the Place Vendome, and many other smart quarters.

Heim has moved into sumptuous new salons in the Avenue Matignon, where he has a bug. hat, scarf and accessory shop In addition to his model salons. Lelong has a new department for frocks under 1,000 fra,

It will not be possible to give a really con- sidered summing-up of principal tendencies for a week or 30-but from the first few shows It szemз pretty certain that skirts for day wear are to be shorter, ccats will be fitted and flared, the walst-line of great importance, and tunics will

be worn.

MARCEL ROCHAS show rang up the curtain on the collections last week. Last February this youthful and promising designer displayed the most elaborate cosmopo- litan styles, but now he has drawn a line across past eccentricities and his winter clothes are designed with simplicity and good cut..

He gives more importance to the ensemble than to the details.

Throughout his whole collection sleeves are elther long and close-fitting or three-quarter length with a neat finish. Puffa, flares and gatherings have vanished,

There are no tricks of padded shoulders or flared skirts in the long alim classic silhouette that he sponsors for overcoats and suits.

pair of leopard glove-pockets are the sole detail of the otherwise plain overcoat, which Angrave has drawn here.

The skirt part of a number of afternoon coats is made of seal dyed green, red or nigger-brown to match the broadcloth of the bodice.

Black, dull-green, verdigris, wine-red and rust-brown were con- spicuous colours in the day clothes.

For evening wear black and white and red and mauve colour schemes are advocated by Rochas, and flesh-coloured dresses can be worn for dinner or dressier occasions.

The same colour contrasts are seen on sashes or shell-shaped embroidery down the close-fitting skirt of a black velvet evening dress.

Blouses for afternoon wear are made in black net or mous seline and are worn over pink satin slips.

Several Muffs are being shown again this year and the one drawn suits above is worn over a black velvet suit, suspended by a broad taffeta have short ribbon. basques which

fall into the long line of the suits with- out breaking

it.

Both on the jackets of tail- leurs and on conta the collars are flat, and either Peter Par shaped, as seen in Angrave's sketches, or with wide revers,

WHILE the waistline remains unchanged,

skirts have shortened in suits and day dresses. They have neither pleats nor slit open- Ings. On several black suits the skirts were trimmed with bright red or green and red tapes down either side.

Fur is used with discretion. Scal, astrakhan and leopard are used on details of overcoats. A
