holiday. mountain- motoring in the Alps, I return to find great number of new models awaiting my Inspection.
સ
A fine lot of cars they are, too, After seeing (and riding in) a good many foreign machines, it is good to realise afresh that Britain is sul on top when it comes to sane and honest automobile production.
Nearly all the secrets are out now. Though, long before the curtain foen up at Olympla on Thursday, October 15, we shall have seen mid tried many of the new models, the Motor Show will not be a whit the less interesting for that.
This year the motor industry winely decided against change for change's ake alone. Manufacturers like Morris, Wolacicy, Rolls-Royce, Bentley and nome others found that the range of well tried and popular cars already on the market needed no taiprovement. and so continued the range with little, if any, modification.
Few Big Changes
There is little important change as regards design. - Coachwork la more graceful (the diandardized salmon of to-day in the equal to the specialised and expensive concliwork of two years ugo), and attention has been paid to the need for proper covered-in luggage accommodation.
The Riley concern. I am glad to see. have reintroduced the famous." Nine Monaco saloon, a car that was prob- ably the most popular of all the low- poweral medium-priced machines.
With many Improvements, including six-light #coachwork and attractive appеamnce, and the famous twin- Carburetter four-cylinder 0-h.p. engine, self-changing gear-box, and automaile
· clutch, a box-section frame and Oirling brakes, the new model is to sell at the price of the forerunner, £208. A very wise move, Mr. Riley.
Then the greatly improved 11-litre Falcon saloon, with better-looking
coachwork, has been reduced in price
to £118.
The "Merlin" Nino la increased in price from 2269 to £215, 'The other
models remain unchanged.
QIT
Then there
the new B.B. "Jaguars." These no-looking cars have been improved by engine modl fications, which have resulted in quieter and smoother running; larger brakes have been fitted; the upholstery is now of Dunlopillo.
·P-100 headlamps are fitted, and die sidelamps have been recessed neatly into the wings No specialised coach- builder could provide you with a better- looking car.
I am told that the cost of these extra tings, at retail prices, la be tween £40 and £40; the prize of the 2-iltre remains unchanged at £385, and the 1-tro is up £10 to £205,
The secret is that the firm hopes to sell twice as many ears in 1937 as it did in 1935, and the proît has accord- ingly been reduced.
On my way to Ireland for the “TT." race, I had a run in one of the 24-Jire saloons, and a very pleasant motor-car it A. Congratulations, Mr. Lyons.

The Alvis programme conalsta of four' now carn, the most noteworthy being the Bpeed 25," which takes the place of the justly famous "Speed Twenty." Most important feature is the bigger 3-1ltro six-cylinder engine. There is a new 4-lltro model, and the other models are the "Created Eagle 20 h.p" and the Twenty-Five." TheSpeed 25 four-seater sports model costs £700, and the most expen- sive car is the 4.3-litre saloon at £905.
Rover models for 1937 consist of 10 hp, 12 h.p., 14 h.p., b.p., and a
"speed" model.
All models retain the. Ireo-wheel; coachwork dimensions have been in creased, and the 10 hp. anloon ng been improved in rear appèunince,
The "speed" model is dimilar to the 10 h.p.. which is an addition to the range, but is Rited with a 20 h.p. engine.
First out with news of what they will actually ahow at Olympia, the" Morris concern is to have eight cars on the stand-Uurce "eights," a "ten " antoon, a twelve coupé. "fourteen" saloon, "eighteen coupé.. and "twenty-five" saloon, a representativo

Another new model of Interest is the now Lanchester 1. n new car in- corporating the well-known Dalmier Huid-flywheel and pre-selective gear- box, and is the lowest-priced six-cylin der car lo be marketed by the Lan- chester canerrn; it costs £325.

Finally. There is a most important new model which will not x at the Motor Shaw, but at Olympia's rival, the Ford Show, at the Albert Hall, par. ticulars of which will be found on an- other page.
The new Ford, which I saw on the Continent, Is startling as regards bolls performance and price.

ROUND ABOUT by
T
The Showman
HERE has been a lot of shouting about a film called "Mary of Scotland" (Inof- dentally, some great mind must have thought, this better title than "Mary, Queen of Scots"), and I remember a similar fuss about another historieni film called "Christina of Sweden."
Note, please, that I have used the ward "storical."
Now, I want you to do me a favour. I want you to necompany mo into the year 2030-a hundred years hence. Hollywood is at producing historical Alms, and a latest is "The Old School Tie," with Mr. Stanley Baldwin as hiero.
Old School Tic
ISTORICAL drama reaches dizzy heights in "The Old School To when, during the Italian-Abyssinian war, Musollal and the Emperor Halle Belusaio make secret journeys to London--Mussolini to see Mr. Baldwin, the Emperor to see Mr. Eden.
Mr. Baldwin, as an old Harrovian, la deeply moved to learn that Mussolinl also went to Harrow, and promises h hl support Mr. Eden, as an old Elonian, a deeply moved to learn that the Emperor also went to Elon, and promlack him kis support
"We must drop Banellonal" anys Daldwin to Eden. "There must be war" boys Eden to Baldwin. Then Baldwin has an inspiration and says to Eden, old man, the Eton and Harrow match shall decide!" And Eden says, to Baldwin, "Old man, that's OK by mo!"
What a ferer of cxeliement there i when the Duchess of Atholl, bowling for Harrow, takes six wickets with six halls and pins for the School and the Duce!
Crand Entertainmont THE critles admitted that there were
Bome historical inaccuracles. "Neither the Emperor nor Mussolini," satd one, "ever went to an English public school; and the Duchess of Atholl could not have been an Harro- vinn as Harrow did not become a co-n educational establishment, admitting boys and girls, until 1984. Even so, it Is doubtful that an Old Girl would have been allowed to play."
However, they said twlin one or two spiteful exceptions) such objections were for the finicky and pedantic anti- eunrians. "The Old Betool Tie," as 'n whole, was grand entertainment on n lavish scale, was packed with colourful early 20th century almosphere, and knoited to a magnificent climax.
Harold Hengist, the giant "Blond Apollo" of Texas, had the chance of ha sereen career as Mr. Baldwin, and made the most of it.
WAR DE LUXE THE chatterers about the Spanish
civil war are excelling themselves. One. in Elarritz, describes hotel tnlic of casualties among acquaintances in the fighting, and proceeds-
"And one hears that the Duke of Alba's magnificent palace in Madrid, filled with priceless treasures, occupied by the familles of Govern- meni troops. With shudders we turn' away, and, since we cannot help, wO try to forget."
It the absence of any sence of proportion that is so amazing; and, as if to emphasise I, the bit about the Duke of Alba's palace is act in black typa,

"Of course. The other planes are due to-day or to-morrow and I'll have enough to keep me occupied, never fear
On the day after Andre returned from his rest and was flying his new plane for the first time, a French officer introduced Terry to Madame do Chobris. She gave him an intent look, followed by a rave isling smile.
"Pardon me, Captain Moore-but have we ever met before? In Itus- sin, perhaps?"
"I have never been in Russia, Madame. And I'm sure we have have met before. I could not have forgotten where and when,, I as sure you, if I had ever seen you before."
They said nothing as they drove at a terrifle speed away from the village out on the country road. When they reached the house they found it in darkness, except for one light in an upper room.
As they crept quietly up the path, Terry spoke in a low, strange volee. "I'll not tell you to keep your courage. Heaven only knows what we may be letting ourselves in for, but I know whatever it is, you will face it. I want you to know I without any exception. I have ever think you are the bravest person,
