THE headless pheasant was found lying near a nest

-containing broken eggs. Feathers were strewn in the grass. Fifty yards away the legs of a partially buried and half-eaten rabbit were found sticking out of the ground.

The earth had been much disturbed, and scooped out. grave-like. A number of lang tawny hairs hung in the bushes leading down to the stream.
