PITTSBURGH TRIES BELATED RALLY CUBS HARD- PRESSED

New York, Sept. 14. Unless St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago

Cubs of the Pittsburgh Pirnies make last-minute rally, interest in the outcome of the National League will subside, as that in the American League lins done already. New York Giants won again to-day and their nearest rivals for top honours, the Cardinals, were again defeated,

Chicago, too, failed. Brooklyn bent the

Cubs by two to one, thirteen hits 10. fen

ten.

Pittsburgh, however, showed sighis of reviving, and making a fight of it. By beating Philadelphia twice, the Pirates leaped three full gantes up the League luble and stepped on Chicago's heels. They won their opener eleven to four, with fourteen hits and a homer by Todd, Camille homered for the Phillles. Eleven hits netted six runs in the night-cap, and despite three errors Pittsburgh was able to nose out the Phillies, but only after an extra inning. Kicin hit circuit for the losera.

Meanwhile, Giants were trimming the St. Louis whiskers, seven to Ave in spite of the fact that they were outhit thirteen to seven and Heusser hitt a homer for the Cards.

Derringer pitched shut-cut ball for Cincinnati, and the Reds beat Boston six to nothing, with twelve hits to Ave.

AMERICAN LEAGUE Chicago won twice from Washing- ton, five to four in the first, though" The Senators lill eleven to the White Sex' ten and profited by two Chicago errors. The game went ten innings. The Sox hit eighteen for eleven runs to three in the night-cap. Hayes homered.

Bridges, for Detroit, kept Boston scoreless, allowing eight hits, and the Tigers won with one run on sive
