For Motorists
H
Ow do you buy petrol? A gallon or two at n time, or do you All the tank when you"call at a Alling station?
Ono way leads to more M.P.G.; the other to extravagarice.
And the extravagant "motorinty ace those who buy petrol two or three gallons at a time.
This point I discussed recently with a number of motorists, and, fortunately, two automobile cngth- eers, one the head of the research department of one of our biggest petrol coinɲables, were present to give authoritative oplatons.
Now the man who puts two gallons of petrol at a time into bla Lank does not get one-fifth the mileage of the man who fills up with ten gallons, always providing. of course, they have the same type of car and cover the saine route,
I have mndo a series of tests, driving ʼn Morria "12" coupe over the same route daily for a week, With a full tank the ear averages 24 in.p.g.; two galions at a time, the consumption increases to 22 m.p.g.
One Reason
Not a great difference, I agree, but on an annual mileage of 16,000 the saving would work out at about 10%, which is not to be despised. With certain cars the difference would be more apparent, especinity over a longer period than my test.
One of the reasons is this-p petrol mixed with air evaporates, and in a nearly empty tank thero is more opportunity for it to do no,

PETROL-WISE?
Now I know that evaporation will take place only according to the area of the surface of petrol in contact with the air, and this is usually much the same whether the tank is almost empty or full. but. while the petrol 19 belag awished about in the tank by the movement of the car, there la mote opportunity for evaporation with only a few gallons of fuel than with a full tank.
It was on this particular point that the discussion first arose, and this was the view propounded by Mr. Georges Roesch, designer of Talbot cars, and one of the most knowledgeable engineers in the country.
"The evaporation In the tank is more a theoretical than a pretical possibility, but undoubtedly it does take place in some slight measure. The motorist who buys petrol in relatively small quantities is wast- ing it because of frequent stops at filling stations, and the loss be- cause of drips from pump nozzles and so on."
Mr. Lesile Callingham, manager of the technical research depart- ment of one of the big petrol com- patles, told me that the evapora-
on theory was not sound.
Great Mistake
He pointed out that it was just as great a mistake to have the tank absolutely full as to have it nearly empty, since a certain amount of fuel will be thrown out of the petrol filler venthole.
On this matter of petrol' con- sumption the motorist who drives with his head as well as his feet and hands will not only go his way more safely but also more cheaply. Here are Domo more m.p.g. ngures. A 24-h.p, car driven at a steady 20 m.p.h. covered 20 miles per gallon; 15.9 m.p.g. at 50.m.p.h. and 8 mpg. at 70 m.p.h. Speed, os' always, costs money.

Ing and unnecessary bursts of full- throttle work will increase potrol consumption in a manner which would surprise most drivers who have never troubled to make com- parative tests.
The road-hog, because of the way he drives, apends more money in covering the same distance than the average careful driver.
There is some slight compensa- tion in remembering that when those gentry flash by us on a corner or force their way through atrame block.
Big Victory
Greatest victory of all in his campaign to make Britain's roads safer is Mr. Hore-Belisha's success In persuading Parliament to place all Grado A roads (about 4,500 miles of the 78,000 in this country) under the direct control of the Ministry of Transport.
For years it has been apparent that Britain has needed a central authority for the main roads. HOW
ridiculous (and dan- gorous) it has been for 30 different highway authorities to control Al, the London-Edin- burgh read, for in- stance.
Different widths, In some places only wide 'enough for two lines of traffic, and
different surfaces in this one road. have been responsible for many accidents.
Under the new plan all this will be altered. In the future we cab expect nationally-planned roads.
A New Guide
"The National Road Book," by R. T. Lang. Is the first of five volumes which will show motorists their way about Great Britain.
Volume I deals with the South of England, and 330 routes, with al- ternatives for every important town in the South. The routes are most informative, providing not only road directions, but also his- torical and scente notes, and mile- ages-given, I am glad to see, since speedometers work this way, in miles and tenths.
All the routes given, have been personally surveyed by Mr. Lang. and, hecordingly, are up to date. Published by Methuen, it costs 106. dd,

Testing the New Cars

"Morris"
SUCCESS
N
o motor manufacturer in tho world provides such complete range of low priced ears as the Morria concern. With the recent introduction of the new 14.hp. model, Morris cars range. from 8 hp. to 25 h.p., and the price list commences at £118 for the smallest to £315 for the biggest,
The eight different chassis with s variety of coachwork provide a car that will surely suit every pocket.
Recently I have been testing the latest 25 hp. model. I have a personal interest in this car, for the first one bufit I and others drove across Europe to Stamboul in a searching test of a new car which had been. produced in reply to the American "thrent,"
The latest model is quite an im- provement on the exceptionally fine car we drove for thousands of miles of bad roads last year. Notable improve- ment has been mado na regards power output and silence of the englue.
I seems essential when considering a big car of this type to compare it with the popular American car
Tho *Twenty-Five" Morris li cheaper than mart of the American cars, and has qualities missing in the cars from
cross the ocean.
Good-Looking
The 25 b.p. Morris saloon is an exceptionally good looking genuine Ave-seater in which comfort, visibility (a bad point with most of the Aineri- can models) and, springing set top marks. The steering is exceptionally good and brakes are fully up to their Job.
In addition, the brakes, which are Lockliced, require little pedal, pressure And are smooth in operation. It is definitely a top-gear ear.
Acceleration is exceptionally good when it la realised that this is a fairly heavy enr, solidly, built and fitted with many extras, including a luggage grid, hydraulic four-wheel Jacks, sunshine roof, spot light, and other fittings which the owner-driver regards as necessities to-day, and yet are rarely fitted to American cars.
The car will accelerato from 10 to 30 mph, in six seconds, and from standing start from 50 m.p.h. through the gears, the me required in 10 and three-f seconds. Petrol consump- [lon during my Lottr averaged 15-10 m.p.g.
The Twenty-five" clocked in timed speed of 70 m.p.h, and at this speed the car was fully in control, and tho engine was reasonably quiet and un- stressed.
The six-cylinder engine fina capacity of 3,406 c.c, and the annual tax is 18.15. The price of the sliding head saloon is 480, and is worth every penny of the price,
