TROOPS CLOSE "REBEL”. LINES ·

Canton, Aug. 12. Whampoa, where Marshal Chiang Kai-shek trained his National Revolutionary Army ten years ago and which has remained completely quiet and tranquil since the revolutionary troops left on that fateful expedition, has been transformed overnight into a political centre to which the eyes of the whole nation are now turned.

Marshal Chiang Kai-shek, shortly after his arrival yesterday from Nanchang by air, established his head- quarters in the exact spot where he was established a decade ago. All this morning large numbers of motor cars carrying high military and Government officials, were surging towards the Whampoa headquarters to pay their respects to the generalissimo. Marshal Chiang is understood to be plunged into conference with General Yu Han-mow, General Chen Chang, General Chen Chien and General Chien Da-chun, as well as lesser officers, considering the Kwangsi situation.

HEROIC DEFENCE OF

OVIEDO BY REBELS

Lisbon, Aug. 12.

Failing immediate help from Madrid, the Govern- ment forces at Badajoz are reportedly near the point where they cannot prevent the entry of the insurgents into Badajoz. The entry will probably be effected within a few hours,

The insurgents' wireless station at Seville reports that a force sent from Madrid to relieve Badajoz was met by the insurgent army half-way to its destination and a fierce battle ensued for several hours, in which 250 Government men are said to have been killed,— Reuter.

HEROIC REBELS

Madrid, Aug. 12.

The war's bitterest fighting is raging at Oviedo where the heroism of the rebels, under the command of Colonel Aranda against a ferocious army of miners, has been conspicuous. Oviedo soon must know its fate... The Asturia Socialist Deputy, Senor Belarmino Tomas, at present in Madrid, learns that the miners' army refused Colonel Aranda's request to permit water to be brought into Oviedo for at least one hour a day. The Red Army demanded the immediate surrender.

Senor Tomas said that 12,000 Oviedo civilians had succeeded in evading the lines of the miners' forces and had taken refuge in the hills.-United Press..
