PHILHANIC

TO START REHEARSALS

FOR "MAID OF THE MOUNTAINS"

THIS WILL BE BUMPER YEAR FOR ENTERTAINMENT

ACCORDING to Chinese lunar calendar, to-day

is Li-ch'in, the Beginning of Autumit. Perhaps you'll not notice much difference in weather for several weeks to come; nevertheless' it is actually the day when people start looking forward hopefully to winter activities.

From now on amateur entertainment clubs and association secretaries, directors and producers will be particularly active.

Here, for instance, is some good news for you about Hongkong Philharmonie Society.

As forcast by Rev. Cyril Brown during stage valedictory to "The Country Girl" last winter, Philharmonic are to producé "Maid of the Moun- tains" in full costume.

Operetta will be produced at Queen's Theatre during week ending December 19,

Ann Winters, who made sensational local debut in "The Country Girl," will be enst as the Maid, which was played by Jose Collins in original stage production at Home.

Balance of cast not yet decided upon, but understand that Jack Grenham, who also made first Philharmonic appearance with great success, in "The Country Girl" will fil leading comedy rolę.

Rev. Cyril Brown, who did on well with "Country fir", is producing while "Maid of the Mountains,"

musical direction will again be In capable hands of Bandmaster Newell,

of East Lancs.

Rumoured that George Goncharo

There'll probably be some changes this year's Philharmonic.

For instaure, it is doubtful whether Bubble Blake, who was so delightful opposite Jack Grenham in "Country Girl", will be in Colony for "Mald of the Moutinins." Understand Miss Blake is leaving Hongkong shortly.

to Philharmonic would do well approach Mr. E. Warner, of R.A.M.C.. whose tenor volee (heard recently over ZBW) is easily the best we've heard in this Colony for many years. Mrs. L. Blair, one of Hongkong's singers of note, has niso returned in time to participate in forthcoming activities, Philharmonie or otherwise.

All in all, Philharmonic are in particularly strong position for forth- coming season, for practically whole of "Country Girl's" cost, which made such good job if last season's pro- duction, is available,

Other amateur entertainers are also preparing for what should be bumper entertainment season.

European Y.M.C.A.

HUROPEAN Y.M.C.A. who, EV

have None mysterious reason, been left to handle Christmas Pan- tomimes without competition from more powerful rivals, has chosen "Juck and the Beanstalk" for this year's production.

Ordinarily, this Pantomime would have been produced in West Lounge early in December, but in order not to clash with Philharmonie, Y has decided on Christmas week, with five performances. George Goncharoff will be in churge of ballet; Noreen Audrey Steele will

First of series (No. 9) will be screened at Queen's Theatre to- morrow. In conjunction with "The ex-Mrs. Bradford,” Three sub jects are listed.

First shows genesis and spread of Townsend plan for giving Ameries's aged over 60 a U.S.$200 nionthly pen- sion for life. "March of Time's" handling of this subject is a valuable Commentary on our timeя and are of genuine world-wide historic. interest. Shots showing the aged Townsendites attending meetings have a pathetic and touching quality,

Second subject shows U.S. Secret Service, constguard and narcotica division co-operating to trap large dape-smuggling ring which spring floated Unistates with heroin. Smashing of the ring, very interest- ingly re-enacted, also broke up a band which was fomenting a revolution in Honduras,

NIGHT

BY "FIRST NIGHT" THANKS to ZBW and Miss Helen O'Brien for one of the finest novelty piano programmes broadcast in Hongkong.

ZBW were lucky to secure Miss O'Brien, an Australian on a short visit to this Colony, and listeners were doubly lucky in having the oppor- tunity of hearing her over the air.

Lots of people in Hongkong don't like "jazzy" music. It's safe to say, however, that broadcasts auch na the one given by Miss O'Brien last night will send souring the number of votes for "Jazz". and "Pinnofortes" in the Competition we're concurrently running to find out the most popular Items with local listeners.

Incidentally, ZBW have booked Miss O'Brien for two further appearances before the Mike. You'll hear her again on Wednesday, Friday next week. Don't miss these dates with your loud- speaker.

The "Thin Man" Is Here

Without His Wife

Film: "The ex-Mrs. Bradford"; Type: Slick Thriller- Comedy; Theatre: Queen's, Commencing To-morrow. THE "Thin Man" is back again. But William Powell has changed leads since his previous prize-winner, which packed the Star Theatre on its umpteenth run last week, and has substituted Jean Arthur.

The Ex-Mes. It is n good start. And the pace is kept up by the appearance of Jenn Arthur, as the ex-wife, with a friend.

The friend, politely introduced, im nudiately serves a writ for unpaid alimony. The ex-Mra, Bradford ap- pears to he inmand-digging blonde, but do not let the colour of her hair and her innocent-open deceive you. She is really in love with the ex-hus hand. And he loves her.

Their trouble is that he likes a quiet surgical practice, and needs no more excitement than the casual cut- ting up of his friends, and she, a writer of murder mysteries, has n talent for getting them both mixed in harrifle alfairs.

ller reappearance coincides with a The favour- race-enurse sensation. ite's jockey has fallen off his horse when the race was almost won, and fallen off, dead. Heart failure, saya the course ductor. But you know, and I know, and the ex-Mrs. Bradford and Dr. Bradford and the favourite's trainer all know that there's hen hunky-panky somewhere..

And so we all get mixed up with thugs, gangsters, bookmakers, anfo crackers, and ejectives (including Jinny Gleason) in an exciting melo. dramatic pursuit from the morgue to the racetrack,

There are a couple more mysteri- ous marders and several unsuccess ful attempts before the ex-Mrs.

"The ex-Mrs. Bradford" may no! have the polish of "The Thin Man" but is a grand bit of entertainment, mystifying and amusing. The thril er plot stands close examination and the spectacle of two loving proplu quarrelling und pretending to hate, if no longer a film novelty, spreads a nice warm glow over an audience. just as did its famous predecessor. My only objection is that the film makes the decorative Misa Arthur a trifle too dumb even for a blonde.
