SPECULATORS ALLOWED

TO GET CONTROL ?

Consequent on reports of the possibility of Canton currency being placed on the same basis as Shanghai, the Hongkong dollar declined somewhat sharply this morning. The official rate on opening was 1s. 31⁄4d., a decline of 1/16th on yesterday's quotation, but later in the forenoon there was a further decline to 1s. 3d..

Yesterday, there was heavy Chinese buying, but to-day this has not been so noticeable. There has, however, been a fair amount of merchant demand. Opinions differ as to the future, but

any marked reaction upwards is not generally expected.
