LEADERS CONFER BUT NO. POLICY STATED

(SPECIAL TO "TELEGRAPH")

Canton, July 14:

High military officials of the South-west would not confirm or deny the report that General Chan Chai-tong had ordered his armies to swoop on the disaffected First Army, on the Kwangtung frontier, immediately. It is from this force, which is commanded by General Yu Han- mow, designated by Nanking to succeed General Chan Chai-tong, that the first offensive move is expected.

General Chan Chai-tong is still in conference with his associates and no final decision on the South-west's action has yet beer announced.

It is indicated, however, that the South-west will ignore Nanking's commands and prepare to meet whatever move the Central Executive Council, makes with stern counter-measures.-United Press.

(SPECIAL TO "TELEGRAPH")

Santiago, July 13.

A severe three-minute earthquake, followed by a tidal wave, spread devastation in Northern Chile to-day, destroying almost every building in the town of Taltal; whose population is about 6,000, and wrecking many buildings in Copiapo, with a population of 10,000.

The walls of houses at Antofagasta were cracked, and it is feared that other towns have been damaged.

Communications and railways have been inter- rupted, isolating Antofagasta Province.

Casualties have not been estimated, but it is believed they will be few.

The steamer Alberto Saverdeck, lying in Taltal harbour, rádioed news of the disaster.
