Santiago, July 13.

A severe three-minute earthquake, followed by a tidal wave, spread devastation in Northern Chile to-day, destroying almost every building in the town of Taltal, whose population is about 6,000, and wrecking many buildings in Copiapo, with a population, of 10,000.

The walls of houses at Antofagasta. were cracked, and it is feared that other towns have been damaged.

Communications and railways have been inter- rupted, isolating Antofagasta Province.

Casualties have not been estimated, but it is believed they will be few.
