M. Titulescu, although not present when the British view was explained, demanded information of the British attitude when he arrived late at the conference. He said:

The death roll of the American heat wave is mounting 'steadily and the high temperatures have sprand to the East Coast.

So intense was the heat in New York City, that two swing bridges over the Harlem 'River were buckled. The temperature rose to 101 degrees, which is only one degree below a long- standing record. The buckling of the bridges necessitated the diversion of traffic.

There's been some rain in several parts of the country, but the weather Eureaux predict a continuance of high temperaturer.
