JAPANESE INDIGNANT
AT. SHIPS' ARREST
Shanghai, June 29.
The recent seizure of two Japanese vessels by Chinese Maritime Customs cutters off Tsingtao 'and' Chikou, which led to the recent Japanese agitation and incidents such as the Japanese rioters attack on the Customs building in Tsingtao, are the subject of a report by Sir Frederick Maze, British chief of the Customs service, to the Chinese Government.
The report states that the Customs cutters followed a perfectly normal procedure when they seized the Japanese ships. The Japanese ships were given due warning and arrested within Chinese territorial waters.
The crew of one of the seized vessels is alleged to have admitted that the ship he was in was engaged in smuggling sugar and another said they had been warned from shore of the approach of the Customs cutter.
. It is also alleged in the report that
