| CHINESE TEACHERS

ASSOCIATION

"TEACHERS' DAY"

OBSERVED

Day. Saturday, being Teachers' members of the Chinese Teachers" and their friends Association assembled at King's Theatre at 9.30 a.m. to celebrate the occasion. The theatre was full to capacity and representatives of over a hundred schools were present.

At the opening ceremony, the Chairman, Mr. Chan Tit-yat, address- ed the gathering as follows:-This is the third time we meet together to The reason celebrate Teachers' Day. of our meeting together is not becauso we have any good news to report, but because we wish to remind our- selves of the importance of our posl. tion and the greatness of our respon sibilities. First of all we must realize that teachers are trainers of people to work and to live, workers for the reduction of illiterates, and trans- mitters of the ideas of people of various ages Thus teachers are very important to society, to the nation, and to the world. As regards the I wish to responsibilities of teachers, mention the following:-To educate the people, to serve society, and to contribute towards the civilisation of the world. We do not say that three years ago--when Teachers' Day was not yet observed-we did not reallse the importance of our pasillon and the greatness of our responsibilities. But, since the time when Teachers' Day was first celebrated we ought to have a more thorough understand- ing of our situation. Every time. when Teachers' Day comes ruund, we must look into ourselves and try to see whether we have been worthy of our position and observant of our responsibilities. This is the chief object of our meeting here to-day. I earnestly hope that all the teachers of the colony will try their very best to full their duties well, and to try to deserve the respect and esteem of the public."

Among the others who spoke were' 6280 issued by the River Conservancy
