Rabies have not figured in the local weekly health returns for some time.

But it is anticipated that, with a return of the hot weather, the incidence, usually kept in check during the

winter months, will again commence to grow.

Stringent muzzling and leash laws enforced in Hong- kong are solely to protect humans from one of the most terrible maladies known.

Several people, including one European, have lost their lives in a most dreadful manner through contact with a rabid dog.

I understand that the Secretary of State for the Colonica, in his reply to the petition, stated that what- ever course the Hongkong Government took to meet the serious financial position brought about by the deprecia- tion of the dollar, the question of salaries reductions for. the civil service was one that could under no circums- tances be reviewed.

Alternative proposals for raising revenue, suggested in the petition, were rejected.

The petition was signed by a vast majority of the civil servants, only a small number refusing to add their signatures. Among those who joined in the suggestions it contained were the majority of Heads of Department.
