A FEW NAMES TO SUGGEST
"We need to find two really first-class bowlers in the com- ing cricket season if we are to have any hope of winning the next series of Test matches in Australia."
That remark was made in my pre- sence the other day. My own opinion that if we can unearth one we shall be fortunate.
Frankly, I cannot see where he is coming from. Every county, with its marseries, its coaching schemes, and its constant, unremitting search the highways and byways, is practically going through the coun-) try with a no comb. No one yet seems to have made a discovery.

We had almost everything our own way in Australin in 1028-29,
We lost the rubber by two games to one to Australia here in 1910 and re- gained it under D. R. Jardino (with Larwood the mainstay of our attack) in Austenita in 1032-33.
Then, beginning with the summer of 1934, our cricket came under a cloud, and, at the moment, I cannot seo that clomi lifting.

There is no one ready-made for the job; and, so far as I can see, the choice rests between G. O. Allen of Middlesex and A. B. Sellers of Yorkshire.

Lawn Bowls Championship Matches
SEVERAL PLAYED.
YESTERDAY
A full programme of matches were decided yesterday afternoon in the Pairs Championship of the Hongkong Lawn Bowls Association,
Some of the games were
nol in complete accord with expectations. but there were no sensational results.
A, W. Grimmitt, a former cham- plon, in partnership with C. Strange had no difcally in winning, on the Kowloon Bowling Green against T. B. Parks and M. Ferguson. The Civil Service pair-won by 90-11. They Incored two fours during the match and never at any time looked like being beaten.
On the Club de Recreio Green N. J. Bebbington and A. Hyde Lay beat S. J. Houghton and T. Fergus. son by 28-16. The losers took the lead with a four on the first head and then single, but when the winners chalked
ked up a five on the fourth they went to the front to stay there throughout the match. On the 13th head Bebbington and Hyde Lay were leading 19-8. A five to the losers on the 18th head reduced the deficit, but the winners held the lend by 25-15,
L. Glendinning and J. Shepherd had a low scoring match against J. D. Thomson and G. E. F. Thomp son, winning by 15-0, the highest 8 for 10 score on any head was a two, the winners securing three and the 4 for 19 loserk one.

am not enamoured of the Idea of u #peed bowler-or for that matter any type of front-line bowler--leading an England team in Australia.
But although Allen's experience of captaincy is limited-nnd he is not even the captain of his county team- he possesses qualifications which the selectors may feel they cannot over-
look. He has, too, made great pers
somal ancrifices to get himself fit.
Sellers, on the other hand, has done wonderful work with the Yorkshire team His abilities as a captain are unquestioned; he is a very good hats-| man and a brilliant field.
But unless it were decided that he
went as captain I cannot see him got- ting even a place in the team,
Here are the men whom I think we can regard as certainties for Aus tralia:

On the Indian Recreation Club rink, P. E. Knight and J. Hollidge encountered little opposition from Mr. S E. Alderman and his wife | L2. H. Collyer and M. Purvis, winning were the recipients of a tray and by 22 shots to 12.
