ABLE TO DEAL WITH TANKS OR 'PLANES
The gun-howitzer, a newly- designed weapon combining the characteristics of the 18-pound- jer field gun and the 4.5-inch howitzer, will shortly undergo tests in the fold in Britain. If it passes its trials successfully it will be the new armament-of the Field Army Brigades, and ultimately of divisional artillery.
Until recently the organisation of Army Field Brigades was three bat- teries each of four 18-pounder güns and one battery of 4.5-inch howitzers. It is now two batteries of 18-pounders and two batteries of 4.6-inch howit
tera.

The howitzer fails to give the range required. The
gun, if it is successfully to engage tanks, is denied cover. Sometimes, during the course of an action, it might be neces- sary for artillery to expose itself in the open in order to put down a more effective fire. The tank combat is n ease in point.
Fire against a target moving on an inconstant course at the rate of 10 to 15 miles per hour makes the em- ployment of direct fire with, a fiat trajectory gun essential.. The posses- sion of a dual gun that could deal effectively with either an aerial targot or a ground target would mean an important economy.
But to be successful the gun-bowit- zer must have range, power, mobility and accuracy.
