University of California trackmen took a 31-38 shellacking from University of Southern Cali fornia at Berkeley, but, despite the lopsided score, there were tough contests. For instance, here's the last hurdle of the 120-yard high hurdle event. Left to right are Tom Moore (Cal), Roy Staley (U.S.C.), and Phil Cope (U.S.C.), each of whom has within the last year been clocked in 14.2 seconds, qualing the world mark. They were bunched as this hurdle, but Moore loss with the hurdle isen fall. ing and Cope took first, Staley second. Their time was 14.3-just a tenth second slower than world.

Japan's Swimming Supremacy To Be Challenged
Medica And Kiefer Hope To Turn Tables At World Olympics
Chicago, May 10. Japan's Olympic Swimming champions will be the victims of a furious American come- back in the Berlin games this summer, four outstanding can- didates for the U. S. team vow- ed here.
Jack Medien, Adolph Klefer. Peter Fick, and Johnny Higgins, National A. A. U. champions and world man- ters of their respective divisions, are convinced Japan's stunning sweep at Los Angeles in 1932 was all a bad dream. They're just as ecrtain it won't happen again.
Sounded out on America's chanee of taking away the only world's sports championship Japan ever has held, each predicted a victory for the United States in his division. But only Vick, stocky New York Athletic Club free style sprint champion. admitted he could bent any Japanese contestant,
"I think I can take the 100 metres free style event at Berlin," Fick said. "In Japan last sum- mer, I beat M. Yuan, the best they have al that distance. No one yet has bettered my short course re- cord of 56.4 seconds, nor my long course mark of 57.2 seconds." Fick is in perfect condition for the Olymple trialn. He is a powerfully bullt man with perfect stroking __rhythm. In retaining his 100-yard free style crown last week he tied Johnny Welsmuller's world record of $1 seconds. He has been swimming only three years.
