Actually there were two deaths as the Grand National, D'Eyncourt having to be destroyed a day or two after the race.

There were ten deaths in fourteen days round the time of the National. At Aintree, the day after the National, Colliery Band was killed, and on the following Tuesday Eagle's Pet was destroyed after breaking- a leg at Fontwell Park. Four horses were killed in four days racing.

As far as records can be relled on, 37 horses have been killed in the 99 years of the race. More than half of these fatalitles took place before 1800. Compared with park courses, Aintres has very few accidents both to horses
