Drawbridge Unearthed at
Tower of London
A subsidence in the small triangular green just Inside, the entrance to the Tower of London has revealed a draw- bridge five feet below the surface..
The discovery, the first of importance at the Tower for many years, is likely to add much to the early history of the building.. The bridge apparently runs along the cast side of the pathway towards the Middle Tower.
Major-General Sir George Younghusband, Keeper of the Jewel House, and author of the book, "The Tower of London," told a reporter:
"I havo a sketch dated 1595, which shows a ditch on the spot now being excavated. At that time the water from the Thames flowed round the Tower.
"It is probable that the structure now being unearthed was a bridge over this ditch."
