The Man

S'PORE PUZZLED

Singapore, Apr. 4.

Several letters have appeared in the Home press regarding Mui-Taai in Hongkong, since the Colonial Secretary's announcement on the subject in the House of A MAN with four nationalities" Commons on February 7.

It will be recalled that Mr. J. H. Thomas announced that a Commission had been formed to investigate "child slavery" in Hongkong.

The following letter on the subject appeared recently in the Manchester "Guardian."

Itathbone;

I am satisfed that the system of registration and inspection is sufficient and is being worked in order to make impossible any continuance of the system of slavery as it existed before.

On September 6, 1936, the Cum- mitter's report states:

The committee agree that it is desirable to make compulsory the registration of adopted daughters. This would effectively prevent the present difficulty of distinguishing between Mui Tsai and adopted daughters and the raising of falke pleas on prosecutions in respect of unregistered girls.

To enforce registration is different matter. As the Hong- kong Government has frequently painted out to ensure completel registration a house-to-house in- This quiry would be necessary. inquiry would have to be repeated at regalar intervals. Such inquirysis neither practicable nor politle. There seems no

million, numbers whereof about 550,000 live in the City of Victoria, about 270,000 in the town of Kowloon, while over 100,000 live on boats in or about the harbour, and the rest in villages, it can be seen that the staff of inspectors could not pos- sibly cope with the tank, in spite of the assurance given in the House of Commons on February 7, 1934.—Yours &c.,

This is one of the nationality puzzles brought to light during the controversy at Singapore over the invitation to four Straits Chinese, who are British subjects, to play for China in the Olympic Granas football competition.

It is contended that if they play for Ching they will lose their British citizenship, but there is no legal provision to prevent them tra- veiling.to Berlin on a British pass- port and still playing for China, --United Press.
