Sunderland have won the first division championship in the English football league as a result of their handsome victory over Birmingham to-day. In the second division the contest for promotion has become intensified as a result of West Ham's partial failure at Leicester and the succases of Manchaster

United and Charlton.

Luton and Coventry both scored wins in the third division, Luton) netting a dozen times against Bria- tol Rovers. But Reading lost on their own ground to Crystal Palace und are being forced out of the run- ning for promotion to the second division.
