Sacramento, Calif., Apr. 3. Weirs and by-passes that divert fluos waters of the Sacramento, Fontier and Americna rivers- three of California's greatest streams-into emergency river beds have saved countless thou sands of dollars during recent Road singes.

Istanbul, Apr. 1. Turkey is to put up a monument to her dictator- president, Kemal Ataturk. It is to cost one million Turkish pounds-£160,000.

It will tower above the heights of the Bosphorus. It will be visible for miles out to sea.

The monument is to symbolise the rise of Mustapha Kemal, one of the few efficient officers in the old Turkish Army, into the only leader who stood out against the collapse of Turkey, thence after his victories into Kemal Ghazi (the Conqueror); and now into Ataturk (Father of the Turks), the autocrat,
