SHELLS THAT ARE EXPLODED BY A RAINDROP

NEW GERMAN GUN AGAINST

HOSTILE AIRCRAFT

THE HONGKONG · TELEGRAPH. MONDAY, MARCH 16, 1936,

A NEW type of anti-aircraft gun which is fitted in the latest German warships is mounted in the Swedish

warship, Gotland, which is on a visit to England.

This now anti-aircraft gun is a single-barrelled weapon, capable of firing high explosivo "shells" of just under one incherages Ordinance, 1755. Hersired. March calibre at a rate of 180 a minute.

The shells are so sensitive that they will explode if they pass through even one thickness of light aeroplane fabric.

Their sensitivity has, in fact, had to be reduced, for it was found that they were too sensitive for use in rainy weather, as contact with a raindrop was sufficient to causa detonation.

The guns are very light and are mounted-upon free pivots so that they can be trained and elevated with great rapidity and without effort. The shells are fitted with "tracers," so that the guns crow can handle thoir weapons much in the same way as a fireman handles a hose, spraying high explosive at attacking aircraft.

Ahead of Other Nations

The anti-aircraft defence of the Gotland consists of three of these guns and four quick-Bring 3-inch anti-aircraft guns, Two, of these are mounted singly, while two are mounted in a twin mounting. The whole of the anti-aircraft gunnery control is of a type designed by a famous German armament firm, It is claimed that this system of control is far in advance of any thing produced by other nations.

If necessary this anti-aircraft armament can be supplemented to Home extent by the main arms ment of six 6-inch guns, for all
