TELLS HOW IT FEELS TO "DIE” New York, Mar. 8. A SHORT squat man who helped decide a state election after he was hanged 42 years ago, came out of the bayous of Mississippi to describe how it feels to "die."

William Isaac Purvis, of Purvis, Mississippi, Was hanged on February 7, 1894. because they said he shot and killed Will Buck- ley. They led him up. the steps of the yellow pic gallows, strapped tight his arms and legs and wrap- ped a thick silk bandage around his | eyes.

They cut the rope which sprang the trap door and Purvis plunged down to what should have been his death. But the knot slipped or untied-no one remembers now-and Purvis crashed eight feet to the ground. The touch hemp rope seared his neck, tearing the flesh, and Purvis collapsed, unconselous.

A deputy scratched "Executed Feb. 7, 1894" after Purvis' name but the 62 year old bayou farmer lives to-day as the world's only executed pri- soner who can discuss his own "leath."

SECRET WEDDING

TO COUNT

Paris, Mar. 8. MESSAGE received here to- day from St. Moritz re- vealed that Senorita Lili de Alvarez, the 30-years-old Spanish tennis star, has been secretly married.

She is now the bride of Comte Jean de Guillard de la Valdene, a member of а very old French

family and a flying "ace" during

the war.

Purvis was found guilty of first degree murder and sentenced to die Sept. 6, but an appeal was car- ried to the State Supreme Court and the execution was delayed. Then the court affirmed the ver dict, the execution was set for Feb. 7, 1894, and the 19-year-old youth prepared to die.

Minister's Tribute'

"The fact that in the past three months there have been only two delays of 24 hours or more on the Singapore-Brisbane section of the air mail route justifies my paying a tribute to the capacity of Aus- tralians to run a difficult service on schedule," said the Australian Minister for Defence (Mr. Park- hill).

"The attention of Imperial Air- ways has been drawn to the cir cumstances," Mr. Parkhill said, "and they have replied that the area on the Empire Service which they control is subject to severe storm conditions and other weather features which occasion deinys."

The rated operating, speeds of planes on the various stages of the route are :--- Imperial Airways London-Paris, 100 m.p.h. Paris- Brindis (by train); Brindisi- Alexandria, 100 m.p.h. Alexandria- Karachi, 100 m.p.h.: Karachi- Singapore, 125 m.p.h. -

From Singapore where the Aus- tralian-controlled associate company Quantàs-Empire Airways, takes over, the operating "speed is 140- 145 m.p.h. to Brisbane.

The court, however, refused to admit that Purvis was legally executed, asserting that he "did"
