The Biggest Invasion Since 1066

By "FIRST NIGHT”

AT least, it's the biggest star invasion

we've ever had.

First of all, Anna May Wong, who went away, came back again the other day. She's staying here now; intends to do so for some time, in order to study.

This week's big event was arrival of Charlie Chaplin and Paulette Goddard on Thursday. Last time Charlie visited Hongkong was in 1933, with brother Syd, Ho vowed then that he was returning, because Hongkong was "only place in world he could find peace and quietness from crowds."

If "Anna May, Charlie and Paulette would only stay long enough, they'll have plenty of company from city of bright lights and Keigs. But the later two are leaving this week-end,

It's going to be race between Warner Oland, Doug. Fairbanks and Clark Gable to see who'll arrive here first.

Doug, whose divorce from Mary Pickford was made absolute in Los Angeles at beginning of month, immediately married Lady Sylvia Ashley, and is nlready on honeymoon to Far East.

I am quite safe in saying that much of Doug's honeymoon will be spent in Hongkong, for he has greatest admiration for Colony he has already visited thrice. He is combining business with pleasure on visit to Orient, for whilst in Hongkong he will do outdoor sequences of "Marco Polo," in which he in- tends taking title role. Lots of the film will be "shot" in this Colony,

Clark Gable's visit in to bo purely pleasure jaunt: He is coming by Pan-American Clipper on first flight to Macao, may or may not be accom- panked by Producer Clarence Brown, Director Joseph Schenck, and others,

Warner "Charlie Chan" Oland is already en route to Hongkong, accani- panied by Mrs. Oland. He is making stayover at Honolulu and will then visit Japan, Shanghal, Hongkong, Manila.

Wondy Barrie is supposed to be coming In Clark Gabie's party. No further news of her plans since death of father in Hongkong a fortnight

ago.

Ginger Rogers is bringing husband Lew, Ayres with her when she rots qut for Hongkong in May, latest date of oft-postponed plan to visit East. She is due to arrive here in June. In previous letters she promised to stay in Colony which, two years running, has voted her its most popular star.

She was born at Karachi, but went to Sydenham High School.

A London contemporary rang up Mrs. Lockwood to congratulate her on her daughter's success. "And I'm sure she gets her talent from you," anid he.

"Oh, dear me, no," replied Mrs. Lockwood. "All her father and I did was to pay the bills when she was young.

ONLY a newspaperman would recall the

fact that, two or three years ago, a robbery of jewellery valued at $20,000 was reported aboard the Eastern and Austra lian liner Tanda upon its arrival in Hong- kong

The victim of the robbery was a young man named Errol Flynn, who had just ar- rived from the New Guinea goldfields, where he had made quite a pile, thank you, digging for, the bright, yellow metal that took thousands of people to the jungles of the former German territory.

Since those not-so-dim days, Mr. Flynn has become Quite A Personage. Maybe his namo hasn't permeated to you film-goers yet, but you'll hear lots about him when "Captain Blood” a Warner Bros. picture; comes to the local cinemas.

After Errol Flynn left Hongkong ho went home to England, where he was given one or two minor roles at the Twickenham Studios. Restlessness took him across the Atlantic, and he was strolling along the streets of Hollywood one day when his fine physique. caught the eye of a Warner Bros, director. His rich Irish brogue settled it-just the "man they were searching for to play Cap'n Blood in the picture of that name.

Errol took more than Hollywood by storm. He took one of its finest lookers the same way; so much 80, in fact, that to-day he's the hubby of Lil Damita, Naturally, it didn't take long for Hollywood's publicity hounds to get on the trail of Mr. Errol Flynn.

I have just boen reading an article by one of them, published in the last. issue of Modern Screen,
