CHINA CURRENCY SURPRISES

PROBLEMS

COLONY MEASURES WILL BE BENEFIT

H. K. & S. BANK'S ANNUAL

MEETING ADDRESSES

Reference to Hongkong and China currency problems figured largely in the speeches at the annual general meeting of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation this morning.

Mr. Stanley Dodwell, who presided, expressed the hellef that the Hongkong Government's measures to control exchange would be for the good of the Colony, in that one of the nightmares of merchandising had been removed. He drew at- tention to the Jean times experienced by business houses, who were not in a position to hear additional taxation, and that to mert the situation the proper course should undoubtedly be to curtail expenditure.

The Hon. Sir William Shenton expressed the hope that when feasible the Government would make a clear declaration of its future monetary policy, which would engender confidence and be of great assistance to merchants and all interested in Far Eastern trade and commerce.

In the course of a reference to China's monetary problems, Mr. Dodwell said a false step now might lead to a recrudescence of speculation and a serious flight from the dollar. Speaking of Senator Pittman's suggestion that China would before long go back to the silver standard, he remarked that it would need a very different policy in the United States before this was likely to come about,

Hongkong's annual racing festival, opened at Happy Valley this morn- ing. It will continue on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and conclude next Saturday.

Owing to the business depression, there are fewer Chinn panies, sub- seription griffins and Dérby griffins than usual, but amongst the new animais, noinbly the Australian ponies, there are sonic extremely promising mounts. One effect of the, decreased number of Derby grifina has been the abolition of three grif- fins' races, but new events have been included to make good the deficiency, and the sinkes have not been in any way reduced.
