Shanghai, Feb. G. Operations on the local exchange market during the Inst week auggest- ed that the cash position of the various banks is becoming very much easier, but unfortunately there are fow signs so far that money is being put into circulation to oil the wheels of commerce and Industry, naya Finance and Commerce.
The chief interest is still centred on the fluctuations of the London-

New York crase-rate. These fluc tuations are always so near the level, of 0.01, upon which our exchange raton are based, that they naturally create a feeling of uncertainty.

THIRD SHIP OF FLEET
Third and last of the new North German Lloyd fleet of express liners for the Far East service, the Gnelsenau arrived in Hongkong this morning on her maiden voyago. She' will leave for Jøpan at 3 p.m. this afternoon.
On board the ship is the Countess Grafin Noithardt von Grolzenau, de- seondant of General Gneisenau after whom the vessel is named. General Gneisonau was the man who, together with General Scharnhorst, built the modern Prussian Army just at the commencement of the Nineteenth' Century, and based it on universal training and the direct participation of the community in the defence of the country in place of mercenary soldiers. The Countess will make a complote round trip on the new ship. The Gnelsonau during her first voyage from Europe has averaged
