There is a lull in the fighting on the northern front, accord- ing to army communiques. Only the foreign ambulance units. assisted by Ethiopian stretcher-bearers and attendants, and notably the British volunteer detachment, are working at full pressure night and day to cope with the stream of wounded arriving from the front lines.

The morale of the Ethiopian troops is excellent and there is no shortage of food, according to a foreign road engineer who has just arrived in the capital from Magdalu.

The roads, however, are in a terrible condition. Mule transport is becoming more rapid than that of mechanical vehicles.

Following the defeat of Ray Desta's army by General Graziani's forces in the south, the Ethiopian military authori ties have taken immediate steps to retrieve the position on the Somaliland front and the streets of the capital have again become recruiting centres, where thousands of men are being enlisted for new units for despatch to the southern lines as soon
