Fighting, in which on several occasions Russian and Manchukuoans came to hand-to-hand struggles, has occurred between Soviet Frontier Guards and detachments of Japanese and Manchurians, it is reported officially from Khabarovsk.
The Soviet communique states that Russian patrolmen discovered four Japanese-Manchurians, or Manchukuoans as they are more familiarly known, two miles Inside the Soviet frontier. This was in the region of Grodekovo. The Manchu- kuoans were in civilian dress.
The moment the patrol attempted to detain them, the Manchukuoans drew weapons and commenced firing. Simul. taneously some thirty more. "invaders" appeared and opened fire on the men of the Russian patrol...
The sound of the firing, to which the Frontier Guards were by now replying, spread the alarm and reinforcements from other patrol companies came up at their best speed and joined in the action. Some twenty-five Guards canie to the ald of the original, patrol.
With these frosh numbers the Runelans pressed the Manchukuoans closely and the invaders commenced to fall back gradually towards the frontier.

Telegraph. 1894 Received, January 31, 9 am)
Copyright Telegraphio Messages Ordinance,
London, Jan. 30. --- Guerilla warfare continues in the Temblen region, where Ras Seyoum is still active, despite the reported heavy losses ...inflicted by Italian artillery, and machine-guns on his raiding bands and in the recent three-day battle, in which thousands of men participated.
}
According to messages from Addis Ababa, Ras Seyoum's present aim appears to be to avoid any large-scale engagements, and only to harass the Italians by "pin-pricking" constantly at advance posts and lines of communication, but always keeping his operations well separated and confined to small bodies of
men.
Meanwhile, in the South the Ethiopians' efforts have been directed at the reorganisation of their forces in anticipation of an attack. These southern armies have admittedly suffered heavily in recent engagements with the Italians.
It is the purpose of the commanders to mass reinforce- ments in order that, when the Italians have reached the hilly country with their heavy, mechanised forces, an effective barrier can be established around Balo and Sidamo.
