Cairo, Jan. 20. Police to-day employed a novel method of identifying rioting students during the disturbances in which, it is estimated, as many as 100 casual- ties occurrel.

From a special tank they sprinkled offenders with a harmless coloured liquid, and thus were able to spot and, if it was necessary, to arrest

them later.

The students finally undertook to return to their homes quietly from the Shelke College where they had been meeting and which lins tem- porarily closed.

The school strike is spreading to the provinent towns but the authorities otherwise report all quiet in the pro- vinces at mid-day--Router Special.

DANGER OF RATE WAR IN ATLANTIC

Threat To Shipping Conference

London, Jan, 29. The fate of the North Atlantic Shipping Con- ference was in the balance at to-day's meeting, which opened under the cloud of the Cunard-White Star Line's threatened with- drawal.

It is understood a solu- tion has not yet been found for the thorny problem of whether the liner Queen Mary should be rated as a first class or cabin ship, and discussions are continuing. Should the Cunard-White Star withdraw from the con- ference there is always the danger that a rate war would result.—Reuter,

of sterling qualities, unassuming in character, Mr, Duncan will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends when he leaves for Home,

Last night's prosentation was to have taken place on Burns' January 25, but, owing to the death of King George, the ceremony had to be postponed.

Nicht,

The Chieftain, Dr. J. C. Macgown, in making the presentation on behalf

of members of the Society of a sliver salver suitably inscribed, eulogised Mr.. Duncan's services to the Society for a period of 95 years.

Mr.

Duncan suitably replied, in reminiscent and humorous vein, re- marking that much of the service which he had rendered to the Society had been made possible through the good offices of the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Company.
