Rome, Jan. 13.
Reports from London and Paris regarding the fresh peace proposals are described as fantastic in authoritative quarters to-day. Dr. Virginio Gayda, who from time to time acts for the spokesman of the Government when writing in Giornale d'Italia, declares that Italy is to-day, as on October 3. in full possession of the initiative and is not preoccupied about ponce.
Italy, says Dr. Gayda, thinks only of the war in East Africa and of the resistance she has organised against sanctions in Europe.
The apparent brief truce in Ethiopia has not been forced upon Italy either by the situation in Europe or the insuperable resistance of the Ethiopians. It comes from the free initiative of Italy, and is inspired by military calculations of advantages. with the object of fighting under the best possible conditions.
Peace in Ethiopia, when it comes, won't be hurried by liquidation of bankruptcy, which the sanctionists want, but by a concrete synthesis of all Italian demands, Dr. Gaydn states.

In the late hours to-day, after hope had been somewhat revived and there was still thought to be some chance that the deadlock at the Naval Conference would be broken, it was officially announced that the Japanese delegation had decided to withdraw from the parley.-United Press.
TALKING WITH TOKYO
London, Jan. 13. The Naval Conference session was again postponed to-day until 3 pm on Wednesday to permit the Japanese delegation to communicate with Tokyo "for information."—United Press. SURPRISE DEVELOPMENT
London, Jan. 13.
There was a surprise development early this evening when after a two-hour conference between the British and Japanese naval delegates it was announced that to-morrow's meeting of the naval conference would again be postponed while the Japanese seek further instructions from Tokyo.
·
At this time the fate of the Naval Conference and the question of Japan's continued participation were still undecided. Everything depended upon whether the chairman at to- morrow's meeting could pilot the delegates past the rocks of Japanese demand for parity, as a vote on this point would inevitably terminate the conference forthwith.-
