INTERESTING ANALYSIS OF THE "COMPLETE” PLAYER

IN LAWN TENNIS?

This article, writes the Lawn Tennis Correspondent of the London Observer, has been occasioned by the consideration of wliat makes for success in lawn tennis. I have lately come across two opinions on this point. One of them is the pronouncernent of no less a player than F. J. Perry: the other is that of a seasoned campaigner whose triumphs have been almost innumer- able, though not gained in the ranks of world players. Perry's opinion is that the constituents of success are: 55 per cent, ability, BADMINTON 30 per cent. stamina, and 15 per cent. pure luck. The ollier (now veteran) authority lays it down that the percentages which make up the ordinary player's recipe for victory are: 50 per cent. feet, 45 per cent. brain, and 5 per cent. racket,

Before considering how far these Hut, up to that stage, which with two estimates are in agreement and lack may never be reached, think

Hockey Appeals Board Proposal Rejected

MAJOR BATES SUCCEEDS

IN OPPOSITION

The proposal to institute an Appeals| Board to deal with cases of unruly conduct on the local hockey fields was rejected at a council meeting of tho Hongkong Hockey Association Inst evening.

Major Bates persunded the meeting to turn down the proposal, arguing that the establishment of such a body was likely to give the game a hint of professionaliam, and it Inferred that -ungotlemanly and unsporting behavi- our on the field was to be expected. He did not see the necessity of such a Board, but he did advance the view that where a player had been suspend- od by a competent committee, clubs should be asked to see that suspension enforced and to refuse to include that player in any of its teams. He also emphasised the desirability of the Association stressing the need for players to observe the spirit of the game.
