HISTORY OF THE ST. ANDREW'S STAKES

HOW TO-MORROW'S BIG RACE

CAME INTO BEING

BRILLIANT SUCCESSESS OF THE DUNBAR STABLE ·

(By "Captain Foster")

It was after the last successful Gymkhana held in November 1922 that the Stewards of the Hongkong Club decided to stage another "Extra Mest" to be known as the St. Andrew's Meeting. and this was held on December 2. The main event, of course, was the St. Andrew's Stakes over the Derby distance and to further the interest, the late Hon. Mr. A. G. Stephen, who was then the President of the St. Andrew's Society, taipan of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation and a keen racing owner himself, kindly donated a handsome silver cup to the winner. The first classic event was won by Mr. A. M. L. Soares's Spotted Sand and was ridden by his son Mr. F. M. L. Soares. Since then it has been an un-

nual classic event and a race cerely trust that it will not be which every owner was proud out of place to append below a and very keen to win. I sin-list of the successful owners:
