BRITISH PROFESSOR'S THEORY
The ground beneath, pou is drift- ing as you read this. It hus been drifting ever since the earth was formed to a rhythm that takes 150 million years to complete,
The movement is silent, irresisli- blo and perpetual. Only ita rcetis volcanoch, carthquakes, climatic conditions affect your life.
Dr. W. W. Waters of the Imperial College, London, writ ing in Science, discusses this carth movement and opposes the theory the earth is shrink- ing and some day will be a dried-up crust lashed by scaring winds and acorched by blazing heat,
Hongkong, long before then will be joined to the Chinese mainland
"There is the fact that the vigour| of mountain building, of volconoca and other manifestations of unrest has shown no sign of senility or lack of energy," he wrote.
"The Earth 1a a lady of a cer- tain age, but she has contrived to preserve her youth and energy an woll as her beauty."
Highlights of Dr. Waters' dis- sertation on form, drift and rhythm of the continents includ- ed:
1. The earth to-day is recover- ing from the greatest period of mountain building And the greatest retreat of its ocean it has ever experienced.
2. Water again will rise over present continents because of the tremendous heat towards the cen- tro of the earth which has liquified

The latest "fish-from-the- sky" story comes from Mel- baurne, Australia.
Residents. at Frankston, a scanide suburb, were mystified to ace tens of thousands of tiny jellyfish desecnding during a rdinatorut.
The fish measured about half an inch in length and about one-eighth to one-quarter of an inch in width. Some were -atriped, says Austral Newa.
When the sun shone again the masses of deposited jelly- fish dried up into brown limpa. The waterspout explanation in the only one so far offered

EXPLORER'S COMING OF AGE

lost
The public is guessing as to the precise sum Mr. George Van.... derbilt, son of the late Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, who his life in the sinking of the Lusitania in May, 1916, received on renching the age of 21 this week. Its curiosity has not been satisfied by the family lawyers, who refuse to discuss the mat-
ter.
Friends. however, ridicule re- ports that the young man, who Parsons married Miss Lucille
early this month, received ne much as £4,000,000. Under the will George and his elder brother Alfred shared their father's calate and were to receive their share in four equal parts, on reaching the ages of 21, 25, 30 and 35.
In 1917, two years after the will was proved, the estate was up praised at £3,350,000, exclusive of real estate property in States other than New York and of pro- perty in England. Debts due by the estate were placed at £800,000.
Escapes Estate Tax
Treasury officials in Washing- ton point out that, whatever Mr. George Vanderbilt has just re- ceived as a quarter of his share in his father's estate, he will not have to pay any inheritance tax on it. The United States had no estate tax laws until more than a year after his father's death.

MYSTERIOUS LIGHTS
A strange light' which Colum- bus saw on October 11, 1492, has been a mystery ever since. Now, however, Mr. L. R. Craw. shay, of the Marine Biological Association Laboratory, Ply- mouth, essays a further solution in the intest issue of Nature.
This curious light was re- corded, as seen by Columbus and others from the poop of the Santa Maria about 10 p.m., ap parently off Watling's Island. The light was seen some dis- tance away in the darkness.
It was described as "Looking like the flame of a small-candle alter- nately raised and lowered." It seems to have gone out of sight Ingain not long after,
It is thought that the light was 35 miles or so eastward of the landfall,
"At such an estimated distance castward of Watling's," says Mr. Crawshay, "the position of the light would be well out Into the Atlantic, in some 3,000 fathoms of water, where the presence of a native canoe accounting for it, as suggested by Markham, seems in- conceivable,
"Scarcely, more credible is the. view expressed by Mackenzie (1828), who makes the landfall at Cat Island, assuming-the-light-to- have been 21 ahore light at Watling's, the island itself, how- ever, being missed by Columbus in the darkness.
