COMMENT.

A number of distinguished passengers arrived in Hongkong numerous this morning by the passenger liburs which came from both north and south.

Aboard the Empress of Canada which arrived from Canada and Japan was the Right Honourable Sir Robert Clive, Ambassador for Great Britain in Japan, who will return by the same ship after short holiday in the south. Sir

Robert will meet his wife while he is in Hongkong and return with her to Japan.

Sir Robert was disinclined to comment on the political situation In the north when spoken to this morning. Much of the trouble there, In his opinion, is the result of press Interviews and state- ments by lending military figures who speak in a somewhat irrespon sible manner and attempt to move much quicker than their Govorn- ment desires them.

RIDICULOUS TALK

The East always has moved slowly and always will, said Sir Robert, and at present Japan has

Much of the prosent disturb ance, Sir Robert believes, in due to disturbing Press reports from Shanghal and the northern provinces where much is made of words by trivial incidents and irresponsible people.

OTHER NOTABLES- Another distinguished family aboard the Empress of Canada was the Marquis and Marchioness of Normanby. Mr. O. Darell is ne- companying the party; who are on a leisurely tour of the world. The - Marchiondes will remain a few daya in Hongkong before con- tinuing her voyage to Suez.

This is the first visit of any of the party to the Far East and the Marchioness described her extend- ed stay in Japan as delightful when spoken to this morning. The tour has proved extremely in- teresting throughout, nor was she disappointed with Hongkong harbour about which she had heard much since crossing America,

The Emperor reviewed the troops at Jijiga and exhorted them to fight cautiously. He inter visited a Swedish hospital, where he decorated several wounded soldiers, and then motored to
