Miss Craven was discussing

amazing facts which are

ini-

cluded in-a report shortly to be placed before the League of by the Nations nssembled

Howard League.

Among the facts' which in- vestigations have brought to light are:-

Women and children con fined in camps under sole supervision of male convict officers.

Chains up to 311b. in. weight im- posed for 12, months continuously. Cross-bar fotters keeping legs 16 inches apart for 10 days continu ously.

Girl of 18 kicked in the abdomen by guard; taken away unconscious and left in agony in cell for 21 hours before receiving attention. Later given nine weeks' solitary confinement for complaining.

Estimated normal prison death rate, 40 per cent.

Prison built to hold 3,300 con- talning 6,300 prisoners.

"In many countries," said Missi Craven, "corporal punishment is used recklessly without any safe guards against permanent injury.

"Solitary confinement, stripped naked in dark, damp, verminous cells is a common punishment for minor infractions of prison rules.

"In

'sweat onc country boxes' standing coffins with just room for a man's upright body are used to extort con- fession."

The case

Tauber, was not in court, but is staying in Vienna.

He has since returned to Eng- land to act opposite Diana Napier In "Pagllacei."

"In another country it is a capital offence to do so." The report is the result of an in- vestigation lusting for more than two years.

The divorce, however, is not legal in Austrig, so Tauber op. proached Frau.Vanconti to con- sent to divorce before the Austrian courts. She refused. Since June Tauber has stopped payment of her allowance.

The reptile house at the Lon- don Zoo has been the scene of fierce dispute over food.
