R. A. F. VERSUS ITALY
Wild West Days Back
In Illinois
Huge fleets of Bghting aeroplanes are being rushed to Mediter ranean points by Italy in response to Britain's concentration of naval power following failure of parleys. England, too, is gathering an aerial armada to offset the Italian threat, with relations strained between the two countries. The squadron of "Fighting Furies," shown at LEFT, Britain's most efeient fighting machines, is reported on its way to the Mediterranean front with thousands of other craft, to be ready for an emergency. Mussolini meanwhile is concentrating his might nir force at atrategic paints. Some of the hundreds of aeroplanes at his command are shown at RIGHT.
CRUISE LINER DIVERTED
MEDITERRANEAN "UNFRIENDLY”
FOUR
British liners which are to leave England this month for cruises in the Mediterranean may be diverted before they enter the Straits of Gibraltar, ow- ing to the International situa- tion.
Shipping companies which specialise in cruising are watch- ing carefully events in Geneva, Southern Europe, and Northern Africn.
Only one shipping company has definitely cancelled a Medi- terranean cruise because of the those warlike atmosphere in waters. That is the P and 0.1 Steam-Navigation-Company,
Ltd.
1
The maiden voyage of their new 24,000-ton liner Strathmore was to have been to the Medi-' terranean and Italian ports.
"Rather Nervous" Instead, she sailed for a seven- to the Canary teen days' cruise Isles.
An official of the line said, "A number of passengers were rather nervous about conditions in the Mediterranean, and it was thought best to arrange another pro- gramme.
"We were not asked by any department to Government change our plans. It had been planned to call at the Italian port of Naples, but it was felt that there would not be the happy, friendly feeling existing, such 448 cruise passengers would expect.”
Four other British shipping com- panics with Mediterranean autumn cruises have prepared to divert linera at a moment's notice.
The Cunard-White Star liner Homeric, cruising in the Mediter- ranean and due to call at Malta did not put in to that port. The official reason given by the com- pany was "Bad weather."

U.S. Farmers To Battle Cattle Rustlers
MODERN WESTERN
VILLAIN TRAVELS BY CAR
Joliet, Ill., Oct. 15. Two thousand Will County farmers have oiled their shot- guns and placed them within easy reach awaiting an alarm that will call them to battle cattle rustlers.
The cattle rustlers, travelling in stolen light, fast trucka, havo hundreds of cattle in the Chicago area in recent months. They also are blamed for the sinying of a farmhond.
Ross Saunders, personal repre- Henry of Governor sentative Horner, called 2 mobilisation meeting of the farmers, nt, which they agreed to rally their scatter- ed forces into a solid organisation with units in each township. The complete state police system also will be available,
Vigilanto days of the old weat when ranchers organised to lynch cattle thieves, were recalled at the meeting.
The farmers adopted the follow- ing programme.
1. Get out your shotgun and n box of bullets loaded with buckshot and a double charge of powder.
Back your car into the garage ready for a quick chase.
3. Burn a light all night in your yard.
4. Cut high weeds on roadsides so thint approaching vehicles can be seen.
5. Organize in every township with a full set of officers.
6. Perfect the chain-telephone system whereby 10 keymen will be called, they in turn to call 10 more keymen to spread the alarm.
7. Prepare spiked belts to ho placed across. highways to appro- hend thieves.-United Pres.
Ex-Kaiser Wilhelm Chops
Too Many Trees
HE GOES BY CAR TO FELL THEM-NOW-
Doorn (Holland), Oct. 12.
Ever since the ex-Kaiser came to Doorn, and that was sixteen years ago, he has been cutting trees.
It keeps him it, it leads to no international complications, but-
it does lend to a scarcity of trees,
The secret of successful tree felling is first to find the tree and that has been the ex- Kaiser's problem..
So quickly was he denuding the woods of Doorn House that a local expert approached him tactfully and asked him to stay his hand,
Daily Trip
Best protection for those few re-. maining Doorn trees came, how- 'over, from the ex-Kaiser's ad- Julant. He is married to the daughter of a Dutch count; the Dutch count possesses trees-lots and lots of them-in the neigh- bouring little town of Amerongen. Would his Imperial Highness use his axe on the count's trees? He would.
So now each day a motor-car takes the ex-Kaiser to the woods of Amerongen-complète with axe..
EX-KAISER WILHELM
Even his trees have vanished.
