Relief Army Of 5,000 To: Start Digging World's Biggest Canal Through Florida By November

Ocala, Fla., Oct. 20.

In 1826, seven years after Florida became a part of the United States, Congress passed an act directing an examination of the country south of the St. Mary's River with a view to ascertain the most eligible route for a canal to connect the Atlantic with the Gulf of Mexico."

Scientist Says Judges All Biased

On September 3, this year, Pro- sident Roosevelt approved an allot- |ment of U.S. $5,000,000 in federal funds to begin work on cutting a channel from the St. Johns to the Withlacoochee River in middle Florida, which will open a direct water route across the state for shipping vessels.

Two weeks later a crew of men was at work making preliminary preparations for the actual dig- |ging, and the dream of more than 100 years was on its way to Cul- filment.

To Be Longest Canal

The canal will be the largest ever built. It will cost approxi- mately US, $146,000,000, and will cut 400 miles from the trip between the Atlantic and the Gulf. Also it will eliminate necessity of negotiating the treacherous Flori- da straits off the tip of the peninsula, where the S.S. Dixie went aground in the recent hur- ricane.

to

In Ocala, six miles north of the canal route, headquarters for the project is located. More than 200 buildings will be necessary house the more than 1,000 men who will be located at the main camp sile alone, while construc- tion is in progress. By November, according to Col. Brehon Somer- yell, engineer from the United States Army assigned to direct the work, 5,000 men, mostly from. re- lief rolls, will be at work cutting the ellannel. -
