SPEAKERS STRIKE NOTE OF OPTIMISM
Impressive in appearance, and outwardly reflecting the stability of the great financial house to which it be- longs, the new Head Office of the Hongkong and Shang- hai Banking Corporation was officially opened this morning, in the presence of a large and distinguished gathering, by His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government (the Hon. Mr. N. L. Smith).
The palatial building, which is easily the biggest structure in the Colony, is situate partly on the site of the old Bank and on ground previously occupied by part of the City Hall. It is now one of the landmarks of the Colony, presenting a striking appearance whether view- ed from the harbour, the two main thoroughfares which it flanks, or the upper levels.
In asking His Excellency to open the building, the Chairman of the Court of Directors (Mr. Stanley Dod- well) said there was much to justify the Colony in look- ing forward in confident expectation of better times, with undiminished faith in the future of the Colony and of China.
