It is at présent impossible to ascertain whether Sir Eric Drummond's conversation with Signor Mussolini, on behalf of Sir Samuel Hoare, the British Foreign Minister, portends a last attempt to reorientate the dis- pute, or whether, as suggested in some quarters, Sir Eric's conversation with II Duce was merely for the purpose of reiterating the assurance of His Majesty's Government that British naval activity in the Mediter ranean did not imply aggressive intentions against Italy.

It is reported that Baron Aloisi'a objections were "so devestating" that MrAnthony Eden, the British spokesman at Geneva and representative on the Committee of Five, was reluctant to belleve they were official. Upon learning that they were indeed oflleial, the Com-. mittee of Five despaired.

LAVAL FIRMLY DEFENDS LEAGUE PRINCIPLES

Geneva, Sept. 23. The failure of the efforts of the Committee of Five now lead to the most delicate and difficult situation for the League of Nations' peacemakers, who, in effect, will have only two alternatives-to sink their principles and allow Italy to have her way, or to uphold the Covenant and let Italy walk out of the League.

The choice is not easy; but there is no doubt which way the consensus of opinion is inclined.

It was expected that the Secretariat of the League would publish the text of Baron Aloisi's remarks to Senor de Madariaga, the chairman of the Committee. of Five, to-night. But there was a slight change in the text, and after consultation with Baron Aloisj, publication was postponed until to-morrow.
