BATTERY DINNER

-VOLUNTEER UNIT HOLDS

ANNUAL GATHERING

The Battery dinner at Volunteer Headquarters last night proved an enjoyable affair, the members of the unit and their guests doing full Justice to the occasion. Speeches were made by the Officer Command ing, Captain T. Addis Martin, by the CRA, Lt-Colonel M. Carrington Sykes, MC, and by the Voluntour Commandant, Lt.Col. H. B. L. Dow- biggin, ...

Colonel Carrington Syken, Commandant, Gentlemen; It is cus- tomary I believe for Volunteer units to have their annual dinners towards the end of the training season rather than at the outset. I do not think I can be accused of boasting when I claim that the Battery is no ordinary unit: we do things quito differently. And so it is I find myself this evening nt the very start of our training very season bidding our guests hearty welcome to our "get-together party.

Our training programme le divided into two sections. The more detailed work is carried out regularly during winter at these Headquarters or at Helehera Fort where the Engineer Co, who operate the lights work in

An excellent start was made with the training in without whom necurate shooting is impossible, and we hope to have least two qualified layers for each gun before Christmas. Our good friend Sgt. Cross of the 20th. Battery, A was in charge of this instruction and to him our thanks are due.

necessary of the invaluable help and encouragement we receive at all times from the Gunners. Col. Hearle is unfortunately unable to be here to-night, but the remarke I would have addressed to him apply equally to Cpl. Carrington Sykes. Wo do Sir, appreciate more than I convey in a few words, all you are doing for us and for your great interest in us. That there is to-day the most de lightful and friendly co-operation existing between the Royal Regiment and the Battery is due in very large measure to your own personal enthu sinan. To you Sir, to your Staff and and to our affiliated Battery-fa It n mere coincidence I wonder that we have chosen this date for our dinner? we would express qur most sincere
