FREIGHT CONFERENCE

HOMEWARD-BOUND CARGO BY 16 LINES AFFECTED

The China Homoward Freight Con- ference in to be effective from to-day, and will affect the booking of cargo by practically every line which runs between hers and Europe.

A central booking offles has been opened at Hongkong and Canton con trolled by Menяra, Lowe, Bingham and Matthews, and the procedure in the future for those desiring to book cargo from Canton or Hongkong to a European port will be to apply to the booking office for space and the spaco will be arranged by Menar. Lowo, Bingham and Matthews in one of the whips of the lines in the Conference.

The cargo space applied for will he given to the various lines in pro partion agreed to by Conference principals. The booking office will then advise the shipper to which line he should apply for shipping ordern. Shipping orders and other documents will then be issued in the usual way by the Ene to which the cargo has been assigned.

Should any shipper have a profer- enel for a particular line he may state this preference at the central booking office and, if possible, hla

wishes will be complied with.

The conference does not affect re frigerated cargo and treasure, and excludes bookings, to North African porta,

Further evidence was heard by Mr. W. Schofield, at the Central Mngis. tracy yesterday afternoon, when the case against five men, Pun Kanı-choi, Ho Wah, la Yau, Pun Tak and Lau Cheung, charged with having murder. Hny Wan-fai, a Chinese doctor, at Chuk Ko Wan, Lantau Island, on September 2 last year, was continued. Mr. W. J. Lockhart-Smith, the Acting Crown Solicitor, is conducting the case for the Crown.
