A well-known actor, now a famous film star, once had to to choose between the two.

He is Boris Karloff, fam ous for his role in "Franken-. stein" and other similar thrillers.

His real name is James Pratt, and his father was in the Civil Service in India.

Karloff told the story of how he chose between Hongkong and Hollywood in a recent inter- view in the film centre.

His father wanted him tol follow an official career, educated him at Merchant Taylor's School, at Uppingham, and at King's College, London. with this end in view.

The Little Entente, the "police dog" of French polley in central and south-eastern Europe, has increased its armies by

than 15 per cent., since Germany left the League of Nations and the world disarmament confer- ence collapsed, it is revealed.

Today the three members of the Entente have 702,000 men under Arbis to see that the territorial arrangements of the peace-treaties are not disturbed.

This is an increase of approxi- mately 111,000 men over the figure returned to the League of Nations about the time Germany left the League and Europe started pro- paring for war instead of disarm- ing for peace.

War Losers Vastly Weaker Against this united force of the status-quo group of the nations who were defeated in the world war have a combined standing army of approximately | 100,000 men with scarcely any regular trained reserves.

Even if these three nations have secretly larger armies than allow- od them in the peace treatles the total could hardly pass 200,000 or considerably less than one-third of the Little Entente strength.

These figures are interesting be cause they show how suicidal would be a war between any men- ber of the Little Entente and any number of the defented powers,

A war in this part of the world is almost out of the question un- less it is a part of a bigger Euro- pean war: A regional war is al most unthinkable.
