Million Population For Centenary
HONGKONG WILL SOON BECOME SEVEN FIGURE CITY
IT will take Hongkong less than its first century of ex. istence to reach a population exceeding a million.
Official estimates place Hong- kong's population at the end of 1984 at 944, 492.
At the end of the current year it will exceed 960,000, and at the end of next year will be within ten thousand of the mil- lion mark.
Of the estimated civilian popula- tion of 944,492 at the end of last year, 923,684, or over 97 per cent. was Chinese, while 20,908, or 2.21 per cent., was non-Chinese.
Slightly over 4,000 Europeans and Americans reside in the Urbán area of Hongkong."
Kowloon proves a more popular residential area. 4,702 Europeans. and Americans residing on the mainland. Of other non-Chinese races, 701 reside in the Urban Bren of Victorin, 115 reside vilinges on the island and 5,858 reside on the mainland,
The majority of Hongkong's | Chinese population resides on the island, 378,199 making their homes. in the Urban area and 47.059 re- siding in the villages. On the father hand, 300,550 Chinese live in Kowloon und New Kowloon, while an additional 102,776 reside in the New Territories.

During 1934 three times the total number of people residing in Hong- kong arrived and departed by river steamer or railway, 2,789,039 ar- riving and 2,811,100 departing.
