The Abyssinian Question

(To The Editor,

Hongkong Telegraph}

Hadretak (Sfr in Egyptian),— Only after reading El Gawab (the Jettor in Egyptian) of El Askari two or three times did it dawn on me that he must have visited the Hongkong Browery, Repulse Bay Lido, and other places where con- viviality is the rule before Katib (Egyptian equivalent for "he wrote") his gowi kħalls (Egyptian for "hot stuff") reply. I might bo tempted to reply' Ummak (Egyptian equivalent of something no vulgár that I am afraid, Mr. Eilitor, you would not print its translation), However, one gathers Ej Askari constantly reads your paper, no he will not miss the significance of this essentially vulgar Egyptian expression--ond also gathers that ho doesn't look nt or know the map of the Red Sea and has missed the significance of my remark ubout slave running. What a blessing the Egyptian Jangonge ig-el Askari can rub along for 16 years with it alone wallahi shutran (Egyptian for "what is elever lud").

while mazivom

ana (gyptian equivalent for "a poor mult like myself") has to learn to read, write and talk Arable, which, whether your readers believe it or not. the Egyptians and Sudanese (and Arabs, Syrians, Iraqis, etc.) use as their fanguage.

1 can quite believe that there are Individuals who have lived in Egypt for 16 years and have never come across a slave: there are many, person who have lived in

Hongkong as long and who have nover been further adeld than Castle Peak and Fanling and whose orbit has never extended even us far as Macao or Canton,

On paper, slavery has even beet abolisked in Abyssinia (we all know it has not, else why did Great Britain vote against Abys- sinin being admitted to the Lengne of Nailons membership7), but It has been my privilege (1) in the past to pay monthly pay stoppages of some of my employees to head- men in the Sudan as slavery release money.

Was

However, probably Askori too engaged in visiting the Con- tinental Groppis Jimmy's

(yes, there is one in Cairo) to notice such unpleasant features. I do not for a minute defend slavery, but I do maintain that the local policy in those parts which are under British influence (not rule) are right, which are: (1) those born after a certain date even if horn of slaves are free unless they elect to remain slaves (and quite a lot do); (2) those born as slaves will remain as sluves, unless they de mand freedom before a magistrate and have means of subsistence. Otherwise, a large number of the population would be suddenly freed without any means of subsistence (as their late mastors would not înaintain them any longer), would become discontented owing to star- vation and would join hands with their late masters (who would be thoroughly rebellious at the loss of their labourers) and raise yet an- other rebellion for the British Government to suppress.

I am not in a position 16 say how the Ras restores the goods, but he does all right on British borders and without the legions of men Mussolini Is decanting on the Abyssinian border.

If Askari would read the English papers, or even extracts from them 38 published in your valued columns, he would realise that the artificially produced "population is a term used for the extra large subsidy-produced birth rate Italy which is a result of subsidies for large families and taxes bachelors.

It

However, I imagine Askari was 'reading your paper while visiting the Hongkong Brewery, Groppis, Repulse Bay Lido, Continental, Jimmy's (buth of them) and some- how didn't have time to read it all Iskut sakran kefaiyah taban kalis (Egyptian equivalent "for mike's.sako let me alone; I am beginning to see double").

Cotton: The announcement to the efect that the bonus to fariners will be limited to 2 cents is construed as bullish factor as cotton under 10 rents will force the use of the loun instrakt of the
