ONE FINED FOR CAUSING INJURY Appearing before Mr. Macfagyon at the Central Magistracy thin morning on remand, Bui Tak-chau, aged 21. goldsmith, was charged with occasioning bodily harm to Luk Lai, aged 20, also a goldsmith, at 64, Staunton Street, on July 26.

Detective Sergeant Guild, relat ing the facts, stated that at noon on the day in question, defendant brought a model anvil to com- plainant's shop to have it engraved. He returned at 4 p.m. to get it, and was given the article by the master. Complainant, who is a fold at the shop, snatched the anvil from defendant, and asked that he be paid back $1.60 which had been borrowed from him by defendant, before the anvil could be given him.

·A· struggle ensued, during which defendant managed regain possession of the anvil. Complain- ant is then alleged to have struck defendant 'over the head with a hammer, but the only injury found on defendant was a slight graze. He, in turn, struck complainant with the anvil, inflicting a wound with the sharp end of the anvil,

removal necessitating his hospital. Defendant then ran out of the shop, but was stopped by a detective who was attracted to the scene.

In convicting defendant, his Worship sald that even if his story about being struck first were true, there was по ексиве for him to cause such serious injury to com- plainant. Defendant was sentenced to one months' imprisonment, while complainant was bound over in $50 to keep the peace for one year,

The Wall Street Journal report on Stecks" to-day yesterday's market: were upward, led by telephone issues, Dow-Jones' industrial average touch- ed the highest level since 1931, utility the year's high and railroad the high- est since February, Telephone and all steel issues renched the high mark for 1935. Stocks on the Curb

Ex- change were irregular, but quiet. In the bonds market domestic tanuÐS were strong,

8. C. & F. New York office cables: The broad upswing continues, with steel and motor issues leading the market. Sentiment is bullish. Steel mill activity during the past week is estimated at 44.0 per cent. of capacity, compared with 42.2 per cent. the pre- vious week.

Cotton: There is a wide divergence af opinion regarding a Government loan and we expect continued un- ! settled conditions pending the out- come of this question. Crop pro- greax is favourable,

Wheat: Reports regarding damago to the crop are unabated, but the market meets with heavy realizing on advances. The visible supply has increased by 4,108,000 bushels. The mill markets are strong.

Carn: Trading was small. crop progress is favourable.

Rubber: The market is acting well in face of the Dutch Cabinet situa- tion. The market looks likely to go higher.

Sugar: This market was quiet, but fully stendy with no new features of interest.
