POLICY PROFOUNDLY
London, July 23.
Hope of a French alignment with Great Britain upon the dangerous Abyssinian issue is becoming stronger. For, in the event of failure to effect a com- promise between Italy and Ethiopia, Ministers are con-Į fident that when the League Council meets France will see the danger to the sanctity of European treaties should the present East African position be allowed to drift into war.

TENSION IN LAHORE
SITUATION REPORTED WELL IN HAND
TEN KILLED IN RIOTING
London, July 22. The Anglo-German naval agreement was severely criticised by speakers of all parties in the House of Commons to-day. The Labour member, Mr. George Hall, complained of the Government's inconsistency for condemning Germany for repudiating the armaments/ provisions of the Treaty of Versailles and, in the next breath, concluding an agreement for the increase of German naval strength which in itself was a violation of treaties to which Britain was a signatory.
Vice-Admiral G. Campbell, V.C., Nationalist member and famous commander of "Q" boats in the War, who was given credit for breaking the German submarine blockade effectively and finally, said the agreement gave Germany a brand new navy whereas much of the British tonnage was verging on the obsolete.
Mr. David Lloyd George, former Liberal Prime Minister, expressed dismay at the light-hearted way the Government not merely condoned the number of submarines at present existing in Germany's yards, but arranged for the building of many more.
