OPEN DAY'S PLAY AT WIMBLEDON

How Vivian Mcgrath Beat Wilmer Allison

London, June 25. Wimbledon opened sensationally as well as sultrily. After Perry had scored an easy win against the French Canadian, Rainville, on the Centre Court, a seeded player and America's No. 1, Allison to wit, was beaten in four sets. He was seeded No. 5, and his conqueror was the young Aus. tralian, McGrath, the second string in singles of a country which is already out of the Davis Cup, beaten by Germany in the European zone semi-final when McGrath did not win either of the matches which he played against Von Cramm and Honkel. He is a variable player, very formidable when his famous two-handed backhanders are coming off, but apt otherwise to be vulnerable on both wings.
