Baron von Cramm clinched the issue to-day when he was matched against Menzel in the first of the singles matches. He.won by scores of 6-2, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-1.

It was a hard and thrilling match with many long rallies. The games went with the service in the first set until 3-2 was called in von Cramm's favour. Menzeľs serving was not of the usual high standard and von Cramm took the next four games in a row.
